World Environment Day Celebrated

Steps taken in the direction of water conservation

On June 5, Paryavaran Mitra organized several programmes commemorating “World Environment Day” in village Fatehpur Karkha of Shikohabad block.

The main project undertaken was reviving of nearby two hundred and fifty years old pond. The pledge for which was taken by all villagers. The day was also marked by cleanliness drive of the pond, a meeting on environment protection and plantation drive in the village.

Mare sloganeering for water conservation fail to achieve anything in the absence of concrete and sustained initiative and action. Despite huge official expenditure on revival of ponds, majority of ponds are still dry and dead. With the objective of reviving ponds bringing them back to life, Paryavaran Mitra has undertaken initiatives to make the people aware about the vital role of ponds in water conservation and preservation of ecosystem. The response of all participants from the local communities was encouraging which strengthened the resolve of volunteers.

The very idea of revival of pond enthused villagers of Fatehpur Karkha, who assembled at the pond sites in the early morning. The first step was cleaning the pond site from all shrubs hedges and trees which had covered the active pond area. There was a spark of hope and joy on the faces of villagers after witnessing the uncovered pond area. After this a meeting was organized in which further actions were discussed in this regard.

Concerned and conscientious citizens who participated and resolved to accomplish the task included village head Narendra Singh Yadav, Rambahadur Shastri, Pramod Kumar Vakil, Radhey Shyam Sharma, Prembabu, Shivram Jatav, Sughar Singh Yadav among many others.
Paryavaran Mitra volunteers also inspired villagers to participate in various government initiatives undertaken in this direction and to keep a vigil of it because it concerns them and their livelihood. Participation of local communities is central to achievement of desired results in any conservational or developmental project.

After the conclusion of meeting tree plantation drive was undertaken on this area surrounding the ancient temple adjacent to the pond. Dr. Subodh Dubey secretary Paryavaran Mitra underlining the importance of conservation of environment gave a call to the villagers to conserve water which is the very basis of all kinds of life on earth. Every one has to associate with the efforts to conserve water at all levels of human existence. He expressed his optimisms and hope that the enthusiasm of villagers cleanly indicates that the revival of this crucial but nearly dead pond is not a distant dream and the pond will again start working as lifeline for the surrounding area and its ecosystems. This will also set an example for other villagers to revive the ponds and conserve water in this respective habitats. Head of block Shikohabad Sri Srinath dev Yadav also encouraged the villagers. P.N. Sharma expensed his thanks to villagers for their participation and support.
