P.M. ACTIVITY MUMBAI : Plantation & Awareness

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION AT PARSIK HILL

Mumbai Paryavaran Mitra Parivar conducted Plantation Drive-cum-Awareness Programme on the occasion of Independence day, which was celebrated at PARSIK HILLS, Nerul Belapur Road in association with Nerul CBD Belapur Walkers Association. This programme was a different experience to the members of the Association this year with “Paryavaran Mitra” playing an important medium of communication among them. Out of the 100 odd members present, One of the senior citizen expressed, it was a unique way of celebrating the joy of freedom, we should become more responsible now towards the society, towards our environment.

Amidst dense forest, all the members gathered at exactly 7a.m as per schedule and the function started with an energetic recitation of National Anthem followed by a formal introduction session. From “Paryavaran Mitra” side, members residing at New Mumbai including Mr. Pratap Gharge and his Son, Mr C.G.S Mani, Mr Sandeep Khurana, Mr. Manoj Panda and Mr. Pradeep Panda were present to make the occasion more fulfilling. Some key issues shared during the Awareness Programme are as under :

 The General Secretary of the Association, Mr Chapke briefed about the objectives of the association and pledged to devote the association on propagating the message of “Paryavaran Mitra”.

 While addressing the gathering on the environmental issues Mr. Pratap Gharge briefly touched upon areas needing immediate attention of the citizens as a whole, some of which are :

 If one thing refuses to respect sovereign borders today, it is the environment. Not surprisingly, environmental degradation and preservation have emerged as major issues in globalization studies.

 In many parts of the world, the accelerated economic development brought by globalization has produced negative environmental impacts. Examples abound are global warming caused by increased industrial pollution, privatization of 'public' resources such as water, the clearing of land to make way for farmers trying to make out more profits in the markets or for multinational companies looking to build new factories.

 However, growing global awareness and campaigns by environmental groups are also having some impacts in saving ecosystems and endangered species.

 We cannot afford to wait for a series of Katrinas or other natural disasters to take action. We are slow in acting on long term sustained solutions because of a failure of political leadership and low level of public awareness.

 The idea of the “Paryavaran Mitra” is to create awareness among masses on their responsibility towards environment, the idea is very powerful because it is designed to raise public awareness of issues which has effect on everyone, it is designed to create good citizens, it is designed to own and become responsible for the future generation.

 The members were eager to know about the activities conducted by Paryavaran Mitra, they were given leaflets and posters to know and let others know on the Paryavaran Mitra theme.

 The meeting was concluded with enthusiast participants planting of saplings with a request to take care of them, followed by light snacks.

 We truly appreciated the generous time and effort spent on this process by all of the participants. It was really a great experience.

 We could induct membership of 12 individuals.
